Cinestar Heavylift with Carbon Fiber RED Dragon

Cinestar Heavylift with Carbon Fiber RED Dragon

Steve and John on set with the RED Dragon on the Cinestar 8 Heavylift. The Cinestar HeavyLift was doing what it was made for.  Loaded with a RED Epic DRAGON and a 35mm Zeiss lens, it was the euro equivalent of two 5 series BMW’s in the air.  But thanks to the carbon fiber body of the RED, and the steel nerves of Steve (not to mention a good production insurance policy), the whole kit was 1lb lighter than our usual Black Magic Production 4K... read more

Aerial Filming Ireland reveal details of Stock Library 21 Apr 2015 : Seán Brosnan The AFI Stock at Aerial Filming Ireland has been created by filmmakers to help filmmakers get the most out of their budget. Aerial Filming Ireland has been in operation since May 2013 and Steven Flynn, as well as being their pilot, is an Emmy award winning cinematographer and Editor. AFI flies a Freefly Cinestar 8 Heavylift using a MOVI MR Gimbal for camera stabilization. They are currently transitioning to shooting 4k original and offering multiple formats on the site. When possible they use their MOVI M10 to gather ground footage at a location. The fluid movement from the MOVI M10 on the ground cuts really well with footage coming from the MOVI MR in the air. Customers have the option of purchasing a single aerial clip from any location, a set of MOVI clips from the ground, or all the clips from same location at a discounted price. Aerial Filming Ireland are also now flying a Cinestar 8 + Black Magic Production 4K Camera (shoots 4K RAW dng /ProRes 4K), a Cinestar 8 + Black Magic Pocket Cinema (shoots HD/RAW dng/ProRes) and a DJI Inspire 1 (shoots 4K/ 60 fps). One of the benefits of such a company is that they can eliminate the expensive route of sending a crew out to get that “one shot” when a film is already in post. It is now possible to browse AFI Stock and pick up the shot that is needed. If the shot is not there, it can be ordered on a deadline if Aerial Filming... read more
Lily Drone – Droning on about customer service

Lily Drone – Droning on about customer service

The Lily drone looks great, but I won’t be buying it out of the gate.  Why? Because I am no longer an easy sell. We bought our DJI Inspire out of the gate and it recently stopped working.  No reason. Just stopped.  We sent it back to DJI at our own expense and were told it would be at least six weeks before anyone would even look at it.  Even though it was under warranty, we were shoved into the queue….and left to the mercy of ZenDesk, their customer service software.  There is nothing zen about ZenDesk! We bought our Black Magic Production 4K out of the gate and it recently stopped working.  No reason. Just stopped. We sent it back to Black Magic.  They picked up the tab because it was brand new and under warranty.  They sent us a new camera within days…which stopped working.  No reason. Just stopped.  We sent it back again and they picked up the tab… again.  Third time lucky. So I will wait until the market has tried and tested the Lily, as much as I want it, because I bet it took more than one take to launch it from Grandma’s... read more

All Aboard – Drones At Sea

All aboard the Celtic Explorer – Drones At Sea The last few days were spent on board the Celtic Explorer Research vessel off the coast of Galway. The RV Celtic Explorer is the larger of the two state-owned research vessels run by the Marine Institute. Great crew and great weather to fly over water. A few wires shook loose and a cable melted, but nothing we couldn’t fix.  What’s that John?                                                                                                                        If only there was somewhere to... read more

Black Magic On The Edge Of The Island Recent stock shoot near Doolin, Co. Clare.  We started out to shoot some stock footage of the Cliffs of Moher, but it was such a beautiful sunset, we only made it as far as Doolin and the stunning Doonagore castle. We used the Black Magic Production 4K and the footage is available on... read more

The one thing that has become very apparent is the flexibility shooting in a RAW (DNG) format gives you.  The dynamic range is great to play with and even Pro Res feels restrictive once you’ve gotten your hands on RAW. As an ex editor and colourist…it’s hard... read more
Respect For What’s Old

Respect For What’s Old

Aerial Filming Ireland & History From The Air Recent shoot near Loughshinny, North County Dublin.  We came across a beautiful Martello tower, but it was a shame to see it had been vandalised. The juxtaposition of such new technology against such an old structure was striking. But what was even more striking was the knowledge that somewhere, there was someone, with a can of blue spray paint in their hand who didn’t give a toss!  It wasn’t even good graffiti! That..you can almost... read more

All Hallows’ Eve

A Ghostly Time At Tintern We just got back from a great shoot in Tintern Abbey, Co. Wexford.  What a haunting place.  We had two days, five crew two actors and a RED Epic to make this short video.  It rained…alot, but in between the showers, I think we caught something special.  And apparently we didn’t learn our lesson about working with children and animals from the first Red Bucket! Take a look. RED BUCKET EPISODE 3 – ALL HALLOWS’... read more
